5 Days Rwanda Cultural Tour and Gorilla Trek – Gorilla Trekking Tips

  • Mountain gorillas live at high altitude and this may cause difficulties for some visitors. You should pace yourself and drink plenty of water.
  • Warm clothing is advised as the trekking is done at 1,700 m above sea level so is generally quite cold.
  • Recommended clothing is long trousers and long-sleeved sweaters or shirts while in the forest to avoid insect stings.
  • Waterproof hiking boots are essential and rain gear useful.
  • Carry your day pack with lunch or some snacks. Eating, drinking and smoking near the gorillas is forbidden – designated time and place will be communicated.
  • Photography is permitted, although you must not use flash
  • Porters are available to help you carry your day pack for a small charge.

Day 1:   Arrive in Kigali, Transfer to Musanze

Upon arrival in Kigali, our guide will pick you to start off your 5 days Rwanda cultural tour with a visit to one of the genocide memorial sites in Rwanda, the Ntarama Church, where mass killings occurred during the 1994 genocide.

After, we will then proceed to Nyamata Church, where a further 2,500 people were massacred during the genocide. The church is also closely associated with the barbaric treatment of women during the genocide, and you’ll learn more about the incidences of mass rape, brutalization, and even the horrific use of HIV as a weapon of genocide.

You’ll then be taken on a guided tour of the Reconciliation Village, learning about how the healing process between victims and perpetrators is taking place. You’ll then have lunch with the locals before continuing your tour of the Reconciliation Village with visits to facilities such as the school and health centre, the local plantations, and an art gallery. After your busy day of discovery, you’ll continue on to Musanze to overnight.

Day 2: Rwanda Cultural Tour in Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village

Today we shall have breakfast in the morning and set off for yet another day of cultural experience in Rwanda visiting Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village one of the entertaining local communities as far as tourism in Rwanda is concerned.  Your visit here will give an opportunity to learn about Rwanda’s pre-colonial history through a series of demonstrations and activities – trying your hand at archery, food preparation, traditional medicine, and even acting as King or Queen for the day. Once your day of cultural exchange is done, you’ll drive to the nearby twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo to take in their beauty before dinner at your hotel and a night’s rest.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in the Volcanoes National Park

This day you will have an amazing moment with the mountain gorillas. This is a lifetime unforgettable adventure you can’t afford to miss!.  In the morning, you will have breakfast as early as 6:30am and drive to the park headquarters for a gorilla trekking briefing from the park rangers and officials. Gorilla trekking is a fun and thrilling adventure on which you’ll trek through sun-dappled glades and dense stands of bamboo in search of these enchanting primates and upon meeting them, you will have a full hour with them, taking photos (BUT WITH NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY), see them as they play, feed, and leaping from tree to tree as if you weren’t there.

Alternatively, you may wish to participate in a visit to the gravesite of Dian Fossey and Digit or to hike to the crater lake atop Mt. Bisoke, both of which offer the opportunity to perhaps catch a glimpse of the park’s mountain gorillas

Day 4: Transfer to Lake Kivu for another cultural experience

After an early breakfast, today you will visit a local school to meet the youth of Rwanda and see how they’re being prepared for the future. You’ll not only get to meet and interact with these children, but you’ll also have the opportunity to teach a class or play games with these smiling kids. Once your morning with the kids is done, you’ll drive to the famously known Imbabazi Orphanage where Rosamond Halsey Carr and her staff cared for more than 400 Rwandan orphans.

After having an experience at the orphanage, you’ll drive for lunch at the Serena Lake Kivu, and in the afternoon you can pay a visit to a local fishing village for more experiences with the locals. Dinner and overnight will be in Gisenyi town, Rwanda’s largest port city which sits on the shores of Lake Kivu.
