This 9 days Rwanda Cultural tour not only involves Rwanda culture and nature walks but also Gorilla Safari, tracking the mountain gorillas as they carry out their day to day activities. This is somehow a tiring activity since it involves walking into steep moist and muddy rain forests of Bwindi impenetrable forest (thicker than the common bush), however, when you come eye to eye with these primates, it challenging experience becomes an adventure to remember.

This safari adventure activity also requires good behavior and respect for the environment since this helps with the forest conservation.


Day 1:   Arrive in Rwanda, Transfer to

Upon arrival in Kigali at the airport, you will be picked by our tour guide and be briefed about the highlights of your 9 Days Rwanda cultural tour and as you get clarity on some things you may need to know about this awesome trip. Dinner and Overnight will be at the Kigali Serena Hotel or Hotel Des Miles Collines.

Day 2: Kigali City Tour

Today we shall have our second day of the tour exploring the city of Kigali. Immediately after a delicious Rwandan breakfast, your driver-guide will pick you up to begin the city tour visiting Rwanda’s major historical sites  such as the Kigali Genocide memorial site, The Richard Kandt Museum, Kigali Solaire, among others. Have lunch prepared by the locals as you take a break from the excursion.

Later in the day, you will visit the reconciliation village in Bugesera, the Nyamata and Ntarama genocide churches and eventually return to your lodge in Kigali for dinner and overnight.


Day 3: Transfer to Akagera National Park

On our third day of the tour, we shall drive to Akagera National park in the east of Rwanda. Along the way, we shall first visit Kirehe and Imigongo to practice the ancient artisan in the region where artistic impressions of the souvenirs are made from cow dung. Don’t miss to watch the Rusumo waterfalls as you proceed to Akagera National Park. Dinner and Overnight will be at Akagera Game Lodge or Ruzizi tented camp. Meal plan: Full Board


Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park Via Kigali

After an early breakfast with a cup of coffee, you will go for an early risers safari game drive and birding in Akagera National Park. Expect to see a variety of wildlife such as Lions, Elephants, Bushbucks, Baboons, Giraffes, and plenty of bird species. After 4-5 hours of game viewing, return to the lodge and rest as you wait for your lunch. In the late afternoon, you will a cultural experience in the northern part of the park visiting the pastoralist heritage experience. Dinner and overnight as above


Day 5: Boat Ride on Lake Ihema, Evening Game Drive

After your breakfast, take a stunning boat ride on Lake Ihema to spot aquatic wildlife like crocodiles, schools of hippos and over 50 species of water birds like pelicans, sunbirds among others. You will later return for your lunch and get some time of relaxation before an evening game drive. You will be on the lookout for more wildlife that you may have missed on the previous morning game drive. Later return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.


Day 6: Twin Lakes, Transfer to Volcanoes NP

Wake up early in the morning, have your breakfast and check out of the hotel/lodge and thereafter transfer to Ruhengeri for ethnobotany tours. Have lunch en-route and then visit the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. This will be accompanied by community project initiatives like brick making sites and beehive locations among others. You should then embark on your journey to your hotel/lodge for dinner and overnight.


Day 7: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

You will wake up very early in the morning, have breakfast and set out for your briefing before the Gorilla trekking activity in volcanoes forest. There are a number of things that you ought to carry for this activity like walkable shoes, rain gears, hut, sunscreen, and insect repellent is much required while in the tropical rainforest. You will have a break to have your lunch and later after Gorilla trekking, visit Buhanga forest for Iby’iwacu Cultural Village with dinner and overnight.


Day 8: Lake Kivu, Community Excursion

After your breakfast, you will check out and transfer to the beautiful Lake Kivu. On your way, you will visit the Banana and Sorghum beer production plants and you could even have a taste if you dare. You will then proceed to the shores of Lake Kivu to relax. Dinner and overnight at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel.


Day 7: Lake Kivu – Kigali

After breakfast, transfer to Butare, “the intellectual town of Rwanda”. Visit the Basilica of Kabagayi, the ancient King’s palace at Nyanza, National Museum your final day cultural tour experiences in Rwanda.

Useful Gorilla Trekking Tips

  • Mountain gorillas live at high altitude and this may cause difficulties for some visitors. You should pace yourself and drink plenty of water.
  • A warm sweater is advised as the trekking is done at 1,700 m above sea level so is generally quite cold.
  • Recommended clothing is long trousers and long-sleeved jerseys/shirts while in the forest to avoid insect stings.
  • Waterproof hiking boots are essential and rain gear useful.
  • Carry your day pack with lunch or energy-giving snacks. Eating, drinking and smoking near the gorillas is forbidden – designated time and place will be communicated.
  • Photography is permitted, although you must not use flash
  • Porters are available to help you carry your day pack for a small charge.
